Fortunat Teodor Napierkowski (1882–1940): A Forgotten Independence Activist, Press Publisher, and Cultural Educator

Abstract

This article outlines the life and work of Fortunat Napierkowski, an independence activist, underground organizer, publisher, and cultural advocate. He founded the secret organization “The Mask” [Pol. Maska], led the National Workers’ Union, promoted clandestine education, libraries, agricultural circles, and scouting. From 1916 to 1918, he was treasurer of District IIa of the Polish Military Organization. Between 1930 and 1936, he edited and published Mazovian Express [Pol. Express Mazowiecki]. He was murdered by the Germans at the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. Photographs in the article come from the State Archive in Warsaw, Pułtusk Branch.
