The Origins of the Parish in Pawłowo Kościelne and the Careers of the Dzierzgowski Family of the Jastrzębiec Coat of Arms

Abstract

The article presents the origins and the early history of the parish in Pawłowo. Established in 1456 from villages separated from neighboring parishes, it was intended from the outset to become part of the family residence of the Dzierzgowski family of the Jastrzębiec coat of arms. The sons of the founder Pomścibor (Jan and Mikołaj) began to attain higher positions of the senatorial and ecclesiastical hierarchy at the beginning of the 16th century. This prompted them to construct a new brick church, following architectural models then used in Mazovia (e.g., Serock, Zakroczym, Kiernozia). The function of a family necropolis was secured for the church by Jan’s son, Feliks Zbożny. Thanks to his foundation, before 1571 the first Renaissance two-storey tomb of this type in Poland was created, designed by Santi Gucci. Pawłowo thus emerged as a foundation of the Dzierzgowski family, who regarded the parish and its church as elements of their residence intended to display the — ultimately short-lived — glory of the family.
