The Hillfort in Stara Łomża in the Light of New Research Methods and Concepts

Abstract

New interpretative concepts concerning the functions of early medieval hillforts were applied to the analysis of the stronghold at Stara Łomża. The analysis takes into account the specifi city of the Mazovian region, particularly its north-eastern areas, in the context of the formation of the Piast state. The study draws on archaeological research conducted in 1982–1984, as well as geophysical surveys carried out for the fi rst time at Stara Łomża in 2017 and 2018. It was concluded that the stronghold at Stara Łomża fulfi lled primarily local socio-cultural and defensive functions. It existed from the 11th to the 13th century and never functioned as a stronghold in the sense of an urban center, nor was it part of the organizational system of the Piast state. The early medieval open settlement located near the stronghold, today known as Stara Łomża nad Rzeką, became the nucleus for the foundation of the town of Łomża in the 15th century.
