The Search for Ideological Foundations of the Educational System in the Early 20th Century (Three Examples from Northern Mazovia)

Abstract

This essay examines the educational philosophies of three educators from northern Mazovia: Bishop Adolf Piotr Szelążek (1865–1950), Jerzy Ostrowski (1897–1942), and Karol Banszel (1890–1941). Szelążek was linked to the seminary and schools in Płock, while Ostrowski and Banszel led the male teachers’ seminary in Mława. Although they drew on different pedagogical sources, their educational views converged in many respects, largely rooted in a shared Christian framework inspired by thinkers such as Friedrich Wilhelm Foerster, Jan Amos Comenius, and scouting principles.
