The Mława District of the Home Army (Selected Issues)

Abstract

The Mława District of the Union of Armed Struggle and then of the
Home Army was one of many basic elements of a large military organization,
which was the underground Polish army in the occupied country. The Home
Army was the basis of the Polish Underground State, and its main goal was
to prepare the basic units to carry out a general uprising in the fi nal phase
of the German occupation. The Mława District operated on the orders of the
superior authorities of the underground army, acting on the orders of the constitutional
Polish authorities in exile. As in other regions of the German occupation,
in the Mława District, the attempt to incorporate other militant unions
operating on the initiative of individual independence movements failed: the
Peasant Battalions from the “Roch” People’s Party or the National Armed
Forces from the National Camp. Despite failing to achieve the basic goal under
the “Storm” campaign, the Mława District fulfi lled its task by functioning
on its own. It was an organization that, in the minds of the local community,
ensured relative safety with its presence, kept people who were hesitant
from cooperating with the occupier, and eliminated dangerous collaborators
of the occupation authorities, pursuant to the verdicts of the underground
courts.
